Memory Matrix presents a larger-scale spatial memory challenge than most card-matching games: a pattern of highlighted tiles flashes briefly on a large grid, and you must accurately reconstruct the exact pattern from memory after it disappears. The key difficulty is that you must remember both WHICH tiles were highlighted AND their exact positions — a dual encoding task that stresses both visual pattern recognition and spatial location memory simultaneously. The game is used in neurological assessments because performance on grid recall tasks correlates strongly with overall working memory capacity and has predictive value for cognitive health over time.
